I write about Objectivism and the work of Ayn Rand occasionally at my flagship site, www.cbrookskurtz.com (motto: This is not a blog), but it is getting harder to resist making the comparisons between the fictional novel "Atlas Shrugged" and contemporary American society. Businessmen and banks are being demonized and vilified as our President and Congress are set to spend us into the Dark Ages. As I don't like posting articles and brief thoughts on them on my site, I created Where is John Galt.
The first original creative project of Where is John Galt? will be to blog "Atlas Shrugged." The massive novel (1,168 pages) is divided into three parts, and each part is divided into 10 chapters. In 2006 I discussed each section on my site, and will post each essay before beginning to blog the new post - hence, the essay on Part I is posted today, and then I will post each chapter of Part I as I finish them. For followers of the project, please bear in mind it will be riddled with spoilers, and since "Atlas Shrugged" is a mystery, this could be relevant if you've been wanting to read it.
Some of the themes I will focus on here at Where is John Galt will include economics, mysticism, secularism, philosophy and, ultimately, the strange accuracy of "Atlas Shrugged," what it predicted, and how it is now playing out in real time. I would invite you to share items of interest related to these in the comments section.
For readers of cbrookskurtz.com, I also will publish notifications here when a new piece is published.
Ultimately, the theme of this site regards what is happening to this country and how we can put a stop to it. Just as in "Atlas Shrugged" I find myself in discussions with more and more mature adults of all political stripes who confess they are scared of what direction this nation is moving. Even more bizarre (chilling might be the better term) is how many people I know who are looking into moving out of the country as they fear their freedom to conduct their lives as they see fit is beginning to be infringed on.
I am one of these people. What would once have been deemed mindless paranoia is enveloping this great country like a fog of dread. What once would have been unthinkable is now becoming a stark reality.
It is for this reason and in this spirit Where is John Galt? was created, and I hope you enjoy.
